Last year I talked about how you can grow your own garlic from cloves you already have, even inside. It was insanely simple and in the spirit of being green & the popularity of composting/reusing kitchen scraps, it’s one of my most popular posts.
This year I decided to expand on that & show you how celery is extremely easy to grow, as well. Yes- even indoors! I promise. It might not be quick or give you instant gratification… but in 6 months you’ll have tall, fresh celery. And you can certainly use the stalks before that; the 6-month mark is just the thickest, tallest celery (think of the kind you see in the supermarket or farmer’s market).
To start, just lop off the bottom of your celery. You want the root piece, the very bottom that you usually just toss. You can cut it anywhere from 1-3″ tall, but just be sure to give it some room for growth. Don’t be too skimpy.
I started mine off in a tiny 8-oz. jar with water and put it on a windowsill facing West. This windowsill gets beautiful light, and it’s also home to my African violet & shamrock plants. The photo below is the celery on day three; you can see the bright green growth just starting to sprout in the middle!
I started taking photos on day three because during the first two days, nothing much visible was happening. But on day three, you could definitely see new growth.
After that, the roots became visible. Nothing crazy, but you could see little roots shooting out from the bottom. Then, on day five, the new growth was sticking out from above the celery root.
I knew it would soon be time to plant the little guy (or gal?) so two days later – day seven if you’re counting- when I checked it and saw it had already gotten bigger, I decided to plant it. What you do is you plant the entire piece, and you make sure to cover it ALL in dirt, except for the tiny little bit of new growth.

I also at this point moved it onto my screened in porch, so it was semi-outside. The amount of sun stayed the same, but it was out in the air & exposed to all the goodness outdoor life can give a plant. Including some rain. Yet it was protected at the same time. I soaked it with water and then… it exploded!
Amazing what a little earth can do. The difference between the photo directly above and the one at the very top of this post was ONE DAY.
And then three days later…
At this point, the photos are moot because I think you get the idea. It’s insanely easy and growth comes very quickly. I don’t even know if the 6 month time frame is valid, because I’m seeing at least a 1/4-1/2″ of growth every day. I might need to transfer it to a larger pot soon!
