Hungry for change.

September 2, 2008

Just some plain vanilla cupcake porn for you all today. My cupcakes wore little Obama toppers made by Natalie of Bake & Destroy! fame. Why? Well, I don’t know. Other than the fact that hes got my vote in November, I just felt like it. (Although maybe watching the RNC had a little something to do with it. ;))

So we’ll call them ‘Obamacakes.’

IF YOU STAND FOR NOTHING, YOU’LL FALL FOR ANYTHING.

For more political cupcakes, and the inspiration for this post, visit Cupcakes Take the Cake. To register to vote, go and rock the vote. To view candidates’ platforms so you can make an informed decision in November, go here and read about it.

I believe voting is the greatest privilege we have in the United States and that if you don’t exercise that right you’re wasting it. So seriously, people, get out there and make a difference in November!

*I normally do not express any political views on this site, I have once before but only because it was part of a baking related story, and I stated clearly then that if you do not like it, don’t read it. Skip over it, move on. Thats the beauty of living in a “free country.” Any hateful or distasteful (no pun intended) comments will be deleted.

  1. Hi!! I absolutely looooove your site, its one of my faves! I was just wondering how you frosted the top. Which tip did you use, and are there any special methods to using that tip to make it look as awesome as yours? Thanks a bunch! 😀

  2. Hi Lauren! Thank you for being a reader and filtering through all the crap I spew to get something worthwhile out of it!! 😉

I used Wilton tip #2D, which is a large star tip, and a 16in. pastry bag. To make the frosting big and swirly like that thats the best tip to use. Its my favorite, along with tip #2A, which is a large round tip.

I did the stripe by painting 2 blue stripes on the inside of the bag before filling it with the vanilla buttercream. You have to squeeze a few “test swirls” out first to get the blue incorporated, so if you have any broken cupcakes or burnt ones its best to do those first.

Another option, that looks slightly different and is more complicated, is to make two batches of frosting- one blue, one white, and fill the bag with both. That makes the frosting look more like that chocolate/vanilla soft serve ice cream, whereas this approach makes it look like its painted. I like this approach better, but they both have a time and place.

    Have fun!

  3. Thanks!

Haha.. yeah I got a new hand mixer this past winter because I was using my mom’s old one that was indeed older than me! And then I got my Kitchen Aid for my birthday, so I am in mixer heaven.

  4. Hi again! I’ve just been flipping through your older posts after enjoying the kool-aid cupcakes, and thought I’d comment on the Obama cupcakes. I love them! Even more, I love that in my lifetime I got to see someone other than a white man get elected finally. Maybe in another 8 or 12 years it’ll be woman. But more important I’m glad that a democrat won. I’m not against Republican, just ready for a change! 🙂 But, back to the cupcakes, they are gorgeous! Never thought I’d say that about blue streaked icing. Your recipes are killing me! Here it is just after 5 a.m. and I’m ready to eat pizza, cupcakes, muffins…etc…

  5. Thanks Grace! Thats sweet! And I totally agree with you… it was time for a change. I really hope that the US will breathe new breath and enter a GOOD era starting Tuesday 😀

  6. Hi. I just found your blog and I was wondering if you’d share where you found the awesome “hungry for change” cupcake. I’d love to add it to my widgets on my blog if you don’t mind sharing.
    Thanks.

  7. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  8. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
