Minute chocolate mug cake.

September 19, 2008

One of my very best friends, Samantha, who I don’t get to see nearly as often as I’d like and miss dearly, sent me an e-mail of a recipe called ‘Minute chocolate mug cake.’ ‘Mug’ as in coffee mug, not the old timey term for someones face.. although why you’d think that I don’t know.  ‘Minute’ as in it cooks in the microwave. My first thought was “This is nonsense, how could it possibly work?” But then I figured, they sell those little microwavable plastic bowls of cake, by Betty Crocker or whoever, so why not. As a lark, I thought I’d give it a shot. I mean it takes about 5 minutes total to prepare and make- I think I could spare the time. And yes, it did work.

MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

What you need:

  • 1 Coffee Mug (large mug)
  • 4 tablespoons flour (that’s plain flour, not self-rising)
  • 4  tablespoons sugar
  • 2  tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 1  egg
  • 3  tablespoons milk
  • 3  tablespoons oil
  • 3  tablespoons chocolate chips  (optional)
  • some nuts (optional)
  • Small splash of vanilla

What you must do:

  1. Add dry  ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
  2. Pour in  the milk and oil and mix well.
  3. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.
  4. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3  minutes on high. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed! (*Mine didn’t do this)
  5. Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
  6. EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to share!)

This is actually an amazing idea. It’d be a great “trick” for kids at a sleepover party, or even if you’re having company and want to do something different for dessert. Instead of mugs, you could even use fancy little bowls, or even soup bowls, as long as they’re microwave safe (which most things are nowadays).  Or its just a great late night snack, when you want something chocolatey and sweet and quick. I was actually pretty excited to file this under ‘no-bake’ because you technically don’t bake it, and you don’t need an oven. I don’t use that category much!

Its got a funky texture, not like actual cake… at first its more like a pudding or sponge cake, and it tastes kinda like a brownie (which is why the nuts would probably be really good in it too). Then as it cools more it dries out a bit. So its very interesting. It’d be amazing with whipped cream on top, or a chocolate or caramel sauce.

All in all, I’d give it an 8 out of 10 mainly for creativity and originality, but its also quite tasty too. Thanks to Sami (and her mom) for sending out the recipe!

  1. A friend of mine sent me a link to this a couple of months ago but I never tried it. Something about making a cake in the microwave weirds me out. However, the ease and fun factor might just win me over. This makes me want to go to Ikea and pick out the cutest mugs to try this in.

Just a question: How was cleanup? Microwaved cake batter sounds like a doozy.

  2. Yeah it weirded me out too at first, then I made it… its not so weird! Its actually good. Well, all things considering.

The clean up was fine. Just soak it for awhile to soften the goo and there probably won’t be a problem 😉

  3. Liked the idea, but not the texture, and the cocoa flavor was muddy. Tried several permutations, and this turned out best: lose the egg; add one heaping teaspoon of cornstarch to hold it together in lieu of the egg, and one more tablespoon (4 total) of milk to compensate for the lost moisture.
Better texture, color, and cocoa flavor.

  4. Wow you totally put way more thought into this than I expected anyone to! Haha but awesome, hopefully someone reading this and interested in making it benefits 😀

  10. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  11. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get
set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty
penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% sure.
Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

My iPad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share
    it with someone!
