Spinning a web of sweetness.

Not sure what your day is going to consist of come the 31st, but mine? Candy, candy, and more candy. Maybe candy corn vodka. Maybe trick-or-treat Halloween candy cupcakes. Maybe none of the above- maybe just handfuls upon handfuls of chocolates & bubble gum & sugar. These cupcakes here are just an early treat!

Oh and pizza. There will most likely be pizza.

See, I’m determined to enjoy this Halloween. Being that it’s my favorite holiday, I am DETERMINED to not let anything ruin it this year. So determined, I made these JUST to snack on in anticipation! Last year my Halloween was ruined when that bitch Sandy blew in here & wrecked everything- knocking out my power for a week. So this year I am sitting on my ass, eating junk with my TV playing all the horror movies I want… but anyway, let me get back to the cakes.

DIY: Creepy candy specimen jars!

DIY’d jars are all over the place. Well, jars are all over the place in & of themselves, however lately it seems people are gluing all kinds of crazy shit on top of jar lids & then painting them… with adorable results. I personally glued some knobs on jars last year & made some super cute candy jars. But some other things I’ve seen: little dinosaurs, bunnies, cats, etc. All of these little knick-knacks just glued onto the lids, then painted, then the lids are screwed back on to make a completely different looking candy jar/thread holder/toy container/etc.

So why not capitalize on it for Halloween?

I decided there was no reason not to. So, ladies & gentlemen, here are my creepy little “candy specimen” jars for Halloween! You can fill them with candy, with plastic eyeballs, with rubber snakes, with whatever you want. Use them as part of your “laboratory” for a Halloween party.

The Friday Fifteen: Halloween Monster Mash!

Really, I wasn’t planning on doing more than one Friday Fifteen this month. But the way it worked out, I just had to. There’s so much going on!

The Friday Fifteen: Halloween Monster Mash!

  1. Look at these STUNNING Halloween macarons! Such intricate work. Some of the most beautiful decorating I’ve ever seen. And so small.
  2. I haven’t carved my jack-o-lantern yet, it’s a smidgen too early (I usually wait until the 25th or 26th at the earliest). But I’m getting inspired. Maybe I’ll go with something simple like this (via Martha Moments). Or perhaps something spookier… like this (via Miller Creative Designs).
  3. Speaking of spooky: blood spatter cupcakes, anyone? Paging Dexter Morgan. Your Halloween cupcakes have arrived. Ugh. Now I’m sad Dexter is over… but NO I HAVE NOT SEEN THE ENDING YET SO SHUT UP.
  4. If you, like me, have an obsession with all things Day of the Dead, then you’ll have to make these black velvet cupcakes with marigold colored frosting. Seriously. The hand-painted white chocolate sugar skulls aren’t mandatory… but they sure are fun.
  5. I have a recipe for Pan de Muerto as well.
  6. And of course, tres leches coconut cupcakes.
  7. You all know by now that not only is Halloween my favorite holiday, but I love decorating for it. And I love this spider pillow from parismarketplace on Etsy. It’s not too over the top but it still screams Halloween!
  8. But if you’re interested in Halloween decor that’s a bit more… *ahem* straightforward… then how about this coffin couch via VonErickson? Now that definitely screams Halloween. Or, alternative lifestyle choice. Whichever. Either way it’s pretty awesome.

My chalkboard front door!

This photo is from earlier in the month (obviously). I had some Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint left over from a few projects & last month I decided to paint the back of my front door with it. I had already painted the front of it black with a different regular latex paint (also Rust-Oleum), and I had been planning on painting the back of it black since I painted the rest of the doors off of the hallway black. But once I thought of using the chalkboard paint & looked on Pinterest to see how other people did it (the whole door vs. a framed-out chalkboard), it was over. I’m kinda sorta obsessed with chalkboard paint anyway, but this takes it to a new level! So far, it’s mainly a running to-do list for house stuff. But once that’s done it’ll be whatever we want it to be! There will probably ALWAYS be a quote… I love quotes.

If you’re thinking about doing this, I say DO IT. It’s fun & awesome.

Have I mentioned lately that this is my favorite time of year? I have? Oh. Well in that case… should we just get right to the cookies?

Because I’d hate to bore you with tales of how much I adore Halloween. I’d just hate to keep talking about it… I mean, it’s probably obvious. I live for monsters & zombies & black cats & witches. I’m the kid who went to Salem, MA at 8 years old & was fascinated by not only Laurie Cabot’s witch store (where I bought my own wand) but also the fact that there was an actual dungeon. I always loved Halloween. When I was 14, I wanted to go as The Bride of Frankenstein. Problem was back then they didn’t have pre-made costumes for that… so my mom, my uncle Pat & my cousin Tommy all helped to hand-make me a costume. My cousin & his girlfriend rented the movie for us to watch, then we all planned it out- my mother made a dress out of torn old white sheets. She spray painted silk flowers black, & she tied a black ribbon on them for my bouquet. My uncle took a “Vampira” wig & hung it upside down then sprayed that Stiffen Stuff on it to make it stick up. My cousin then spray painted two silver lightning bolts for either side. BAM! Combine that with white face paint, black exaggerated eyebrows & drawn on neck stitches… I won best costume at the party. Take that, parents of kids with store bought costumes.

She’s still my favorite, the Bride.

The wicked witch of the cupcake.

Vintage postcard: flying witches.

Yeah. That’s right. Today we’re talking about witches. Because in case you’ve been living under a rock, it’s October, and that means one thing to me: Halloween.

Ohh, Halloween. My favorite time of year. The leaves changing (hopefully) & crunching beneath my boots, the air getting brisker, the wind kicking up. The costumes & makeup start appearing in stores earlier & earlier nowadays, but I reserve my Halloween excitement for the first week in October. I refuse to do ANYTHING Halloween-related before October 1st. Yes, it’s my favorite holiday & yes, I’m excited. But it’s like buying Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving; it’s just wrong to me. I’ll wait until October to celebrate Halloween… & I’ll wait until December 1st for Christmas, thanks.

That being said, I was super psyched to post this little cupcake topper how-to. I couldn’t wait any longer! I didn’t come up with this idea myself (unfortunately) but I did somewhat modify it from the original directions. I did that because I didn’t have matching mini cupcake liners & regular liners. I don’t do many mini cupcakes, so I never buy the liners. I adapted the directions to suit me & my materials, and with just a little bit more work put in I think they look just as cute. Gettin’ pumpkin apple sauce-y.

Happy October! My favorite month. It’s finally cool enough to bake more. It’s time for super fresh apples & tons of pumpkins. And all the best spices are fall-appropriate: cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, etc. And let’s not forget that it’s the month of my favorite holiday- Halloween!

So we’re going to celebrate my favorite month/upcoming holiday & get sauced! Or not. Or actually… yeah we are, but not in the way you think. A different kinda sauced.

Like I said, it’s both apple season & pumpkin season. Everyone is going apple picking, pumpkin picking, & shoving apple cider donuts & pumpkin lattes in their pie hole. You can’t go anywhere without tripping over pumpkins for sale & bushels of apples. So of course I had this big old batch of bright, shiny, fresh apples, right? Apples don’t last forever. So they had to be used up, right? And naturally I’ve already stocked up on organic canned pumpkin. Well…

I made applesauce. I know what you’re thinking:

 “Three posts in a row about apples!? BO-RING!”

But wait.

Yes, I made applesauce. But… it’s not what you think. I had to add pumpkin.

I know. SAY WHAT?  APPLESAUCE WITH PUMPKIN?!

Uh huh. Yup.

What’s black & white & green all over?

Such fun. Oh, this time of year is a lovely time for baking, isn’t it? I’m always so sad when Halloween is over, and all my witches go away for another year. But I’m also really happy this Halloween. Why? Because Hurricane Sandy is gone and I can enjoy my absolute favorite holiday! It’s still a little windy, but thankfully she’s moving on. And so are we.

Black & white liners are from sweet estelle baking supply on Etsy. Vintagey toppers are so old, I have no idea where they’re from, but you can get similar ones here. As far as I know, Fentiman’s Curiosity Cola is sold at Fairway Market (but I’m sure the website lists other places). The table runner was a gift from my sweet friend Yoyo a few years ago. All the recipes needed can be found at the recipe index. Just a regular vanilla cupcake, and regular vanilla buttercream with one vanilla bean scraped into it. I wish you could see the vanilla flecks better in the photos!

It was a dark & stormy All Hallows Eve….

Happy Halloween my little zombies! No, it isn’t quite Halloween yet, but it’s close enough. And I thought a cocktail called a “dark ‘n’ stormy” would be a perfect treat for sharing with you on Halloween. Come on. Is there a better named drink than that for Wednesday night? No. Not only for Wednesday night, but tonight- since the ridiculous Hurricane Sandy is barreling her way up here to NY today. And what could be better than a delicious spooky sounding cocktail made with homemade ingredients for a pre-Halloween storm dubbed “Frankenstorm”?

Ugh, I know. It sucks. I really hate hurricanes. Down in NOLA or other hurricane-prone places, people have “hurricane parties“; they’re so used to it. But see, here in New York we don’t get them often. we aren’t used to it at all, and they can be terrifying. And the shitty thing about it is not only do we never get ‘em, but when we do… they’re usually a doozy. Especially these “once in a lifetime” ones that combine with Nor’Easters or cold fronts to make a monster of a storm. They’re historic storms that end up not only knocking out power & screwing everyone else’s life up for days if not weeks, but sadly killing people on a grand scale. But what is there to do about it? Nothing. Nothing but sit & wait it out. Mother Nature does what she wants. It’s her world, we all just live in it. Respect your mother, right?

It seems I’ve been posting tons of drinks & alcohol infusions & such lately; pumpkin spice latte mix, candy corn vodka, now this. But I can’t help it. Once you start with this stuff you can’t stop. And this particular post all started when I made my own ginger ale… or ginger beer, actually.

The original recipe requires only ginger, sugar, water, lemon juice and a fungal-bacteria symbiote[4] known as a ginger beer plant. Fermentation over a few days turns the mixture into ginger beer.

Forms of live culture other than the ginger beer plant can produce a fermented ginger beer. Cultures used include brewers or baker’s yeast, lactic acid bacteria, kefir grains, and tibicos. Brewing ginger beer generates carbon dioxide as in beer. The alcohol content, when produced by the traditional process can be high, up to 11 %,[2] although ginger beer is usually brewed with much less alcohol.

Brewed ginger beer often includes other flavorings, prominently lemon or lime juice. These juices are not merely ornamental, however, as they establish an acidic pH balance for the solution; this helps in both protecting the ginger beer from other cultures, as well as facilitating sugar inversion to increase the availability of the more readily metabolised fructose and glucose. Other, more strictly flavoring-specific, elements have often included: citrus zests; cayenne pepper and other hot spices; and admixtures from other brews such as nettle or dandelion beers.

I had wanted to do it for a long time, but I kept putting it off & putting it off. I don’t really know why- maybe because I just kept thinking it would be more complicated than it is? Or maybe ’cause I can be kinda lazy. Whatever. But at any rate, I finally got to a point where I decided I was going to do it. And I did. Complete with a scary little bat flying around…

I found two awesome recipes here and I figured I’d try them both. The first one I made was the “fermented” version; made with yeast. It was super easy to make and even though it took almost 3 days to get to sip on, it was more than worth it. I used lime juice instead of lemon and it was fine. Of course with that homemade yeasty-ness too. Not too shabby. But the thing I really wanted to do was make a dark ‘n’ stormy cocktail with it for Halloween. And boy, did I ever!

A Dark and Stormy (or Dark ‘n’ Stormy) is an alcoholic highball style cocktail popular in many British Commonwealth countries, such as Bermuda and Australia. It consists of dark rum and ginger beer over ice. It is optionally accompanied by a slice of lime.

While the Dark ‘n’ Stormy is traditionally made with dark or black rum, one variation nicknamed the Light ‘n’ Stormy uses 10 Cane, a light rum, and Blenheim Old #3 Hot ginger ale.[7][8] Another variation on the Dark ‘n’ Stormy, called the Ginger Bush, swaps Rum for Bourbon.[citation needed]

For several years, Gosling’s has been a sponsor of the annual yachting regatta Chester Race Week in Chester, Nova Scotia. The Dark ‘n’ Stormy is the special drink of the night each year, made with ginger beer brewed by local Halifax, NS brewery Propeller Brewery.

Rum mixed with ginger wine is a particularly strong combination, known as a Turbo Dark N’ Stormy, and is a favourite tipple of Pembroke College Boat Club (Oxford).[citation needed]

Alright. So the drink really doesn’t have anything to do with Halloween or even this time of year. But the name, people… the name! And while I’m no expert on this drink, I find the homemade ginger beer really made all the difference. And as a matter of fact, I liked the process so much, I made brewed up a vanilla cream soda version the next night. And I’m planning on a root beer version. But you don’t care about all that. You wanna get drunk. I understand.

I actually found that this ginger beer was much better in the cocktail than it was alone.

DARK ‘N’ STORMY

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot (or 2 ounces) of dark rum (preferably Gosling’s Black Seal, but anything dark will do- I used Myers’s myself)
  • 1 cup homemade ginger beer (recipe below)
  • One quarter of a lime
  • 1 sprig fresh mint

Directions:

  1. In a glass filled with ice, pour rum, then pour ginger beer. Stir.
  2. Squeeze the lime in, and if you like, toss the lime right on in the glass.
  3. Top with mint, candied ginger, or lime if you’re fancy, or you can spear a lime slice on a fancy pick like my Halloween bat.
  4. Drink up.

HOMEMADE FERMENTED GINGER BEER (adapted a teensy bit from monikakotus.com)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2-2 tablespoons freshly grated ginger root
  • juice of one lime
  • 1/4 teaspoon baker’s yeast
  • cold fresh spring or filtered water (yeast does not like chlorine, so make sure you don’t use fresh tap water unless you let it sit overnight first)

Directions:

  1. Through a funnel add sugar and yeast to a 2-liter plastic bottle. Mix grated ginger root and lime juice and then transfer it to a bottle, add water to fill it half way and shake well to mix all ingredients.
  2. Add more water, leaving about an inch head space, screw the cap on and shake again. You can also mix all the ingredients in a jar and then transfer to a plastic bottle.
  3. Leave in a warm place for about two days and then transfer to refrigerator, to stop fermentation process. Refrigerate overnight.
  4. Pour it through a strainer and enjoy!

Okay, now, technically the only rum you should use in a dark ‘n’ stormy is Gosling’s. They apparently patented it. But I don’t really see why you can’t, in the privacy of your own home, use whatever dark or spiced rum you have: Kraken, Sailor Jerry, Captain Morgan, Myers’s, Bacardi, etc. And also, technically, you can use ginger ale instead of ginger beer in a dark ‘n’ stormy. Nobody’s going to kill you. However traditionally, ginger beer is what’s used. So if you’re not going to make your own, then at least buy one. There are a huge variety of brands, from Goya, Reeds, Barritt’s & Regatta to those fancy small batch micro-brewed ones you can get at a natural market or beer distributor. And if you do make your own, and you find it too yeasty or too earthy for your taste, try using Champagne yeast instead of supermarket baker’s yeast in the next batch. I thought it was amazing, myself, but of course everyone has a different idea of what kind of ginger ale they like. Tweak it the way you want it. More sugar, less sugar, more ginger, lemon juice instead of lime juice, different yeast, etc.

Also just a small note of massive importance: you cannot use a sugar substitute. Yeast needs sugar to work it’s magic, so you could try lessening the amount of real sugar, and subbing Stevia or something for the rest… but you absolutely MUST use real sugar in some amount in order to get the yeast going. Also, because of this, there’s a minute amount of alcohol in the finished product. Nowhere near enough to matter, really, unless you’re restricted by health or religious factors. It probably amounts to the same percentage in chewing gum or something.

And now for something (not so) completely different…

The second one was a syrup that you mix with sparkling water or club soda to make an “instant” ginger ale. It’s sweeter, doesn’t have that ‘yeasty’ flavor of the other one and it’s very, very easy. Way easier than the fermented stuff, and that stuff is crazy easy in and of itself. Basically: one cup thinly sliced fresh ginger + one cup sugar + two cups water = ginger syrup. Put it all in a medium saucepan, bring to a light boil then lower the heat & simmer for ten minutes. It makes about 2 cups (mine filled a 16-ounce/pint jar almost to the top). Pop it in a jar or bottle, put it in the fridge and use it as you see fit. The website I got it from says one part syrup + three parts club soda (or sparkling water) makes a great instant (and fresh) ginger ale. Delicious. You can have it alone, but if you like you can just squeeze a little fresh lime juice and/and crush some mint in it and you’re on your way. DIY or Die! It’s a crisp, drier version of store-bought ginger ale. Probably cheaper too. Just keep the syrup in the fridge.

It definitely has a more “user friendly” taste than the fermented ginger beer. If you want to ease into making your own sodas, this would be the one to start with.

It’s not as dark as a store-bought ginger ale, but if you like more gingery flavor & add more syrup, it’ll get darker. And yes, you could use the ginger syrup/club soda mix in a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, too. And as an added plus, my mother informs me the ginger syrup is excellent in tea as well. Another plus? Ginger is soothing for stomach problems, and the fresher the better, so this syrup can act as a tummy soother if you’re nauseous or have other ailments of that sort. Which you just might on November 1st, after all that Halloween candy is eaten.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, guys. This storm is supposed to be a wicked one. Everyone else in Sandy’s path, be careful. And if you’re not in her path, be careful out there on Halloween. You never know who… or what… you’ll encounter. Even if it is dark, but not stormy. Bwahahahaha…

The Friday Fifteen: Halloween edition!

Lately, it’s been pretty busy around here. First the giveaway, then TOTB Thursday, and now today is Friday. You might remember a few weeks ago I started a new feature here at the blog called The Friday Fifteen. And not only that, but it’s almost Halloween! Just five days left. There’s a lot of Halloween-related fun going on in both the internet world and the “real life” world (whatever that is). Candy, aprons, pumpkins, OH MY!

This year my jack-o-lantern is Edgar Allan Poe, my very favorite literary figure.

It’s not my best work ever, no. The pumpkin was crazy thick! I had a hell of a time scraping it thin enough to cut and even then I screwed up a little bit in some spots, but all in all it bears enough of a resemblance. So anyway… all that stuff together means it’s time forThe Friday Fifteen: Halloween edition.

  11. Williams-Sonoma Halloween plates. Shut. The. Front. Door. If there was someone in front of me right now I’d punch them just out of the sheer awesomeness of those plates.
  12. Every year at Halloween, I get super excited to see any and all references to The Headless Horseman, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow & the Van Tassel family, because I’m related to them (by marriage, not blood)! It’s also one of my favorite stories.
  13. Carving my jack-o-lantern! I wait for that every year since I was a little kid. So much fun. And you get to eat the guts & seeds! That’s right. Pumpkin muffins made from the cut out pieces of jack-o-lanterns. I’ve been doing it since I was in kindergarten. If you haven’t done your jack-o-lantern yet, then try it. They’re super yummy and pretty healthy. Tons of fun for kids, too. If you’ve never done it, then I suggest you do it. Just try it once. It’s messy but so much fun!
